The Night

It caresses me, holds me,

May be my friend.

I lie and I reach,

Night after night without end.

It lets me escape,

As I toss and I turn.

The world spinning faster,

Instead I have learned.

With the force of my movement,

This fight I've won for tonight.

As I lie alone,

Again comes the light.

I awaken glistening in sweat,

With all of the raging where did I get?

Sweat mingled with tears in this battle I've waged,

I feel like an animal partially caged.

A droplet runs across the center of my rising chest.

Would I have noticed had I not tried to catch my breath?
